As I previously mentioned in my last blog, I’m pregnant. Along with that, since this is my first pregnancy, I’ve been vigilant and reading pretty much everything I can get my hands on about being pregnant. On top of that, I was recommended groups on Facebook that discuss Pregnancy and Type 1 Diabetes.
As I said before, I had a great fear of getting pregnant because of all the things that could possibly go wrong. However, because of all the support I’ve received from doctors, nurses, family members, friends, I feel confident that this journey is going to be a fantastic one.
I’ve also been extremely lucky because I haven’t endured the morning sickness, or any of the crazy symptoms of pregnancy besides headaches and hunger. I continue to educate and learn from other women just in case I missed something.
I think the most celebrated comments that I’ve seen are from mamas who are slowly but surely bringing down their a1c levels. What’s the hemoglobin a1c, you ask? It’s an approximate three-month average of blood sugar levels. A normal range is below 5.7% and if you have diabetes, the closest to normal is best.
Today I went to see my endocrinologist, who I’m seeing on a monthly basis now and had my a1c checked as I normally do. As I heard the machine stop, I looked up to see the lowest my a1c has ever been! I did a double take and saw a 6.5% on that machine! I was so thrilled! The lowest my a1c was before today was a 6.9%, which I was thrilled about then, but I also was on a super strict diet that once I came off of, bounced my a1c back to it’s 7-ish range and there I stayed, that is… until today!
It quite literally took about a month and a half to get it down. I know that I’m doing this more than ever, for my baby, but at the same time, I’m so thrilled that I’ve been able to do this for both of us.
